Tune in to the Vans Girls Blog featuring “kick-ass” chick Dylan Penn shot and interviewed by Nico Guilis.
Kick-Ass Chicks: Dylan Penn
Yes, Dylan Penn is related to that Penn—namely, Sean Penn, aka our eternal idol Jeff Spicoli. But the 24-year-old California girl is blazing her own acting trails. Nico Guiliscaught up with her to talk about her dream roles and her first pair of Vans.
Do you remember your first pair of Vans?
The first Vans I ever owned were the Checkerboard Slip-Ons. I was about 12 years old and I remember spotting them at a used clothes store on Haight Street in San Francisco. They were $40, never worn! I still wear them today.
Your best friend started a headphone company called The SunnyLion that you are wearing in some of the shots. Tell us about the company and why you love it. The sound on the headphones is amazing!
The Sunnylion is LA based company that started with handwoven earbuds, you can customize your own colors and they never tangle! The SunnyLion is more than just headphones as it has turned into a cool, fun, active lifestyle brand.
Your dad Sean Penn is a bit of a Vans icon himself. Does he still wear the Checkerboard Slip-Ons?
I haven’t seen my dad rock any Vans since Fast Times, but I know he would take credit for making them as popular as they are today.
You have been dabbling into acting a bit. What would be your ideal part to play?
I’ve just started acting and it’s been a blast. I’ve had the opportunity to work on two movies thus far and both were amazing experiences. I think an ideal part would be one that is completely different from me. I would love to play a character where I would be forced to change my appearance in a dramatic way as I feel like that kind of change would assist in changing my mannerisms, the way I speak—like Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
What advice do you have to give?
I would say do everything it takes to make your dreams come true especially if it’s hard and risks must be taken to achieve that dream; personally, the challenging times are the ones that have made me grow the most as a person and I believe that to be in itself a success.
